Choosing a tracker

One question decides it: does it have its own battery?

Machinery with a battery can power a tracker permanently. Trailers and unpowered gear need one with its own battery. Both report to the same map.

Yes, it has a battery

How it works in your line of work

Construction and civil

Machinery spread across several sites is hard to keep an eye on, especially overnight and over weekends.

  • Put a geofence around each site and get alerted when anything leaves
  • See which machine is on which site without ringing around
  • Log servicing and set reminders on the Pro plan

Our picks

Agriculture and farming

On a big property, vehicles and machinery can be anywhere. Tracking puts them all on one map from your phone.

  • See where tractors, farm utes and trailers are without driving out to check
  • Get alerted if anything leaves the property boundary
  • Mark paddocks, sheds and gates as points of interest on the map

Trackers report over the Telstra mobile network, so they need coverage where the asset is. Check Telstra's coverage map for your property before you buy.

Rental and hire

Once gear leaves the yard you're relying on the customer. Tracking lets you see where it actually is.

  • Set an approved area and get alerted if hired gear leaves it
  • Check where overdue items are before you pick up the phone
  • Use 90 days of history to settle questions about where gear went

Trailers and caravans

Trailers and caravans often sit in storage or on the street for weeks. A battery tracker keeps an eye on them while you can't.

  • Attach magnetically to a metal surface, with no wiring
  • Get alerted if it leaves the storage yard or driveway
  • Move the tracker between trailers whenever you need to

Know the moment something leaves site

Equipment often sits on open sites overnight and over weekends, with nobody around. Geofences turn that quiet time into something you're told about, with a location you can act on.

Leave the recovery to police. If equipment is stolen, report it and give them the live location rather than trying to retrieve it yourself.

Getting the most from asset tracking

Check coverage first

Trackers report over the Telstra network. If a site or paddock has no mobile coverage, the tracker will catch up once it's back in range.

Mind the metal

GPS passes through plastic but not thick steel. Avoid mounting inside a steel toolbox or fully enclosed compartment.

Set a charge reminder

The PLX3 lasts around a month per charge. A monthly reminder in your phone or the Pro maintenance log keeps it running.

Tell your operators

If staff operate tracked machinery, most states require written notice. Our legislation guide covers the rules.

FAQ

Equipment tracking questions

Got a mix of machinery and trailers? Tell us what you're running and we'll suggest a setup.

Can I track equipment that doesn't have power?

Yes. The PLX3 runs on its own rechargeable battery and attaches magnetically, so it suits trailers, site boxes, attachments and other unpowered gear.

How long does the PLX3 battery last?

Around a month per charge. It reports every 3 minutes while moving and goes to sleep when the asset is still, which is what makes the battery last.

Will the PLX5 work on my machinery?

If the machine has its own battery, almost certainly. The PLX5 supports 9V to 36V, which covers 12V and 24V systems. We recommend an auto electrician installs it so it's wired safely and hidden well.

Will it work on remote sites and farms?

Our trackers use the Telstra LTE Cat M1 network, which covers a large part of regional Australia. They do need mobile coverage to report, so check Telstra's coverage map for your site or property.

Can I get an alert if equipment leaves a site?

Yes. Draw a geofence around each site or yard and you'll get a push or email notification when an asset leaves or enters it.

Can site managers have their own login?

Yes, on the Pro plan. Sub accounts let each manager see only the assets you assign to them.

Can I keep service records against each machine?

Yes. The Pro plan includes maintenance logs and reminders, so you can record servicing and get reminded when it's due.
